Gary is the most psychotic and disturbed of all ESR’s characters because he, his family, and friends are nearly extinct! Only 500–1,000 remain due to pollution, dams, getting caught in fishing nets, and sand mining to make cement—which removes vital sandbanks gharials need to breed and lay eggs. Hence his crazy eyes!
Gary’s super-long snout is great for catching fish, and the mound atop the end of his snout is used to make buzzing sounds to communicate and to blow bubbles to attract females. The name gharial comes from this mound, which looks like a clay pot—ghara—used in India.
